Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is taking action to combat chronic wasting disease (CWD) by hosting sampling workshops for hunters in Yellowstone County. The workshops aim to equip hunters with the skills needed to collect data essential for tracking and managing the disease in deer, elk, and moose populations. FWP emphasizes the importance of gathering samples to increase awareness of where CWD is most prevalent in the region. The workshops teach hunters how to remove lymph nodes from harvested animals for disease testing. Participation is voluntary and free of charge, with samples being examined in the field or sent to the Wildlife Health Lab in Bozeman. Hunters are encouraged to bring thawed deer heads with neck meat and a sharp knife to collect specimens. Additional sampling demonstrations will occur throughout the general hunting season to aid in understanding and addressing chronic wasting disease within the community. Hunters can find more information on upcoming workshops through Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.
