Check stations in Western Montana report increased hunting harvests on opening weekend

The 2024 big game general hunting season in Montana opened with increased harvest numbers compared to the previous year. Hunters in western Montana reported higher numbers of white-tailed deer, elk, and mule deer during the opening weekend. Check stations in Regions 1 and 2 saw more hunters compared to the previous year, with a total of 107 elk, 18 mule deer, 60 white-tailed deer, two black bears, and one moose harvested. In northwest Montana, hunter numbers were up by 21%, with a 10% success rate. FWP officials are urging hunters to submit their animals for chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing, especially in Hunting District 170 where the first positive case was reported. Hunters are now allowed to purchase two 170-00 Deer B licenses to increase CWD surveillance. Testing is voluntary in most areas, except for the Libby CWD Management Area. Any animal testing positive for CWD will receive replacement tags. The 2024 general deer and elk season runs from Oct. 26 to Dec. 1, with other hunting seasons also underway. Hunters are reminded to stop at check stations whether they harvested an animal or not. Overall, the hunting season in Montana is off to a successful start with increased participation and harvest numbers.
