Man convicted of murdering 4 family members and pregnant woman over curfew dispute from his teenage years

Raymond Childs III, 21, was convicted of murder in the shooting deaths of five people, including family members and a pregnant woman in Indianapolis in January 2021. The victims included Childs’ father, stepmother, siblings, and his brother’s girlfriend who was nearly due to give birth. Childs was also convicted of attempted murder and carrying a handgun without a license. The killings stemmed from an argument over Childs staying out late, and prosecutors said he methodically went from room to room shooting the victims. His 15-year-old brother was also shot but survived by fleeing the house. Childs’ first trial ended in a mistrial after a witness verbally confronted him in front of the jury. A jury deliberated for three hours before convicting him on six counts of murder. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said the verdict provided justice and was a difficult journey for the family and friends of the victims. Childs faces 40 to 65 years in prison on each murder count, 20 to 40 years on the attempted murder charge, and one to six years on the handgun charge. Childs’ sentencing is scheduled for January 7, and his attorney has not yet commented on the conviction.
