The Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Lame Deer, Montana is under a curfew following a shooting incident on October 23, 2024. An executive order issued by Tribal President Serena Wetherelt established a nightly curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until further notice, with individuals out in public subject to questioning. Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting, who has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to a $23,000 fine and a 4 year and 9 month prison term in tribal court.
Northern Cheyenne Disaster & Emergency Services announced that Lame Deer Public Schools will have early dismissals on October 25, although it’s unclear if this is related to the curfew. Residents are urged to provide any information or surveillance footage related to the incident to law enforcement.
With the situation still developing, the community is urged to stay vigilant and cooperate with authorities. NonStop Local is continuing to follow this story and communicate updates from BIA, NCIS, and Tribal Council. For more information, contacting the BIA/OJS Law Enforcement, NCIS, or the Northern Cheyenne Investigative Services Facebook page is advised. Residents in the west side of Lame Deer are specifically requested to review surveillance footage for any potential leads.
