The opening game of the 2024 World Series between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers was filled with drama. In the top of the ninth inning with the score tied 2-2, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a line drive that appeared to be a home run, but a fan interfered with the ball. After a review by MLB officials, Torres was sent back to second base with two outs. The Dodgers went on to win the game 6-3 on a walk-off home run by Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the 10th inning. The controversial play drew comparisons to past instances of fan interference in baseball history, such as the Jeffrey Maier incident in 1996. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts described Freeman’s home run as one of the greatest baseball moments he had ever witnessed. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday night in Los Angeles, with the Yankees starting Carlos Rodón and the Dodgers starting Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
