Missouri bird flu patient’s blood test results released by CDC as outbreak continues to spread

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that the bird flu virus, or H5N1, has not spread from person to person in the U.S. Despite a patient in Missouri testing positive for the virus in August, close contacts who developed respiratory symptoms tested negative. It is believed that both the patient and a household member became sick from the same source, likely an animal or animal product. All individuals who fell ill have since recovered, with symptoms mostly gastrointestinal.

While the risk of bird flu in the general population is low, there have been increasing cases linked to farm animals and wildlife workers. An outbreak in dairy cows has spread to 333 herds across 14 states, with most cases linked to workers in close contact with infected animals. Additional cases have been reported in poultry farm workers in Washington, prompting the state to invite a CDC team for assistance. California, which has reported the largest number of cases, has also requested federal help.

Symptoms of bird flu in infected individuals have been generally mild, with redness and discharge from the eyes and reports of upper respiratory illness. States such as Colorado, Michigan, and Texas have also reported human cases of H5N1. Despite these cases, health officials remain vigilant in monitoring and responding to the situation to prevent further spread of the virus.
