If elected, Trump promises to dismiss Jack Smith within two seconds

Former President Donald Trump stated that if re-elected, he would immediately fire special counsel Jack Smith, who has brought two federal indictments against him. Trump also claimed to have immunity at the Supreme Court and called Smith a “crooked person.” He believes Democrats would not impeach him if he were to fire Smith. Firing the special counsel could potentially end the federal government’s prosecution against Trump. Smith is currently pursuing an election interference case against Trump in Washington, D.C., while an appeal is ongoing in the dismissed classified documents case in Florida. Trump has delayed court proceedings with claims of presidential immunity, leading Judge Tanya Chutkan to issue a gag order on him. Trump has criticized both Chutkan and Smith multiple times. Last year, he warned that Justice Department officials, including Smith, would end up in a mental institution if he is re-elected. In response to potential actions by Trump if he were to return to the White House, Rep. Adam Schiff introduced legislation to prevent a sitting president from firing a special counsel involved in a criminal prosecution against themselves. The legislation is unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled House.
