The recent Genoa football derby between Sampdoria and Genoa ended in violence as nearly 40 people, including 26 police officers, were treated for injuries after violent clashes between rival fans. The clashes occurred before and after the Coppa Italia match, with Sampdoria triumphing over Genoa in a penalty shootout.
The violence erupted when Genoa supporters displayed banners that they had stolen from Sampdoria ultras in recent months. Fans threw fireworks, bottles, and other objects at each other, resulting in police intervention to restore order. Eight people have been reported arrested in connection with the incident.
Since Genoa is in Serie A and Sampdoria is in Serie B, this was the only match between the two city clubs this season, leading to heightened tensions. The two sides had not faced each other in over two years, leading to escalating tensions between their respective ultras.
Sampdoria’s victory means they will face AS Roma in the next round of the Coppa Italia. The violence in Genoa reflects ongoing tensions between the two sets of fans, with the authorities struggling to maintain order in the city.
