A former Orange County prosecutor, Stewart Rosenwasser, died by suicide at his home as FBI agents arrived to arrest him on bribery charges. The federal indictment alleged that he accepted $63,000 in bribe payments while serving in the district attorney’s office. When FBI agents arrived, Rosenwasser allegedly pointed a gun at them, leading to a fatal shooting. The indictment also accused him of using his position to investigate and prosecute individuals at the request of a co-defendant, who allegedly paid him bribes. Rosenwasser tried to conceal his actions by lying to senior officials in the district attorney’s office. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on the case. The Orange County District Attorney described the situation as “heartbreaking” and expressed condolences to Rosenwasser’s family. Despite receiving awards during his time in the district attorney’s office, including Arson Prosecutor of the Year, Rosenwasser resigned quietly in June. The FBI is conducting a review of the agent-involved shooting during Rosenwasser’s arrest.
