China has released David Lin, a US pastor who had been jailed since 2006, raising hopes for two other American citizens, Kai Li and Mark Swidan, who are also detained in China and considered wrongfully held by Washington. Lin, now 68, was serving a life sentence for contract fraud, but the US State Department had been advocating for his release for years. Lin’s daughter, Alice, expressed joy over his return to the United States after nearly 20 years in prison. The US government is optimistic that Lin’s release could pave the way for the release of the other two Americans currently detained in China. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan recently met with Chinese officials, and a congressional hearing on US citizens imprisoned in China is scheduled for this week. The hope is that diplomatic efforts will lead to the freedom of all Americans wrongfully detained in China.
