Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, who was killed by Israeli troops in the West Bank, will be laid to rest in her family’s hometown of Didim in western Turkey. Eygi was shot in the head while participating in a demonstration against illegal Israeli settlements, sparking international condemnation against Israel.
Hundreds of mourners gathered in Didim for funeral prayers ahead of the burial, with visitors coming from Turkey, the United States, and other parts of the world to pay their respects. Eygi’s family expressed disbelief at her passing and called for justice for their daughter.
The Turkish government is investigating Eygi’s death and has called for an independent inquiry through the United Nations. Turkish President Erdogan has promised to ensure accountability for her killing, while US President Biden has urged Israel to provide full accountability.
Eygi was a member of the International Solidarity Movement and was participating in a peaceful anti-settlement protest when she was fatally shot. Witnesses to her killing dispute the Israeli military’s claim that she was hit unintentionally, saying she was deliberately targeted.
Her family has called for the United States to launch an independent inquiry into her death, as they believe an Israeli probe would not be adequate. Eygi’s coffin was brought to her family’s home and a mosque in Didim for funeral rites before being laid to rest in her family’s hometown.
The mourners at Eygi’s funeral in Didim reflected the widespread grief and outrage over her tragic death, as the international community waits for answers and justice in the wake of this senseless killing.
