Pop star Taylor Swift has announced her endorsement of Kamala Harris for president in the 2024 election. In a post on Instagram following the US presidential debate, Swift praised Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” who she believes can lead the country with calmness instead of chaos. She also encouraged her fans to register to vote and urged them to research the candidates’ stances on important issues.
This endorsement comes after Swift had previously expressed concerns about AI-generated images falsely depicting her support for Donald Trump. In response, Swift felt the need to be transparent about her political plans for the upcoming election. She signed off her post with a reference to comments made by Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance.
The Trump campaign dismissed Swift’s endorsement, with spokesperson Karoline Leavitt suggesting that the Democratic Party has become a party of wealthy elites. However, Swift’s endorsement may have an impact on the election, particularly among younger Gen Z fans who may be encouraged to vote as a result.
Swift’s endorsement of Harris joins her previous endorsements of Democratic candidates in 2018 and Joe Biden in 2020. The singer’s influence on political matters has been compared to Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama in the 2008 primary, which researchers concluded was worth about a million votes for Obama. Swift’s endorsement focuses on women’s rights, an issue that typically favors Democrats.
