According to recent data released by the Montana Office of Public Instruction, student test scores in math have shown improvement while scores in English have seen a decline. The results were based on standardized testing done in the 2020-2021 school year.
The report showed a 3.7% increase in the number of students meeting or exceeding proficiency levels in math compared to the previous year. This improvement was attributed to a combination of factors including enhanced teaching strategies, increased resources, and additional support for struggling students.
On the other hand, English test scores saw a decrease of 1.4% in the number of students meeting or exceeding proficiency levels. The decline was seen across all grade levels and was particularly notable in areas such as reading comprehension and vocabulary.
State Superintendent Elsie Arntzen expressed both optimism and concern regarding the results. She praised the efforts of educators and students for the improvement in math scores but also emphasized the need for continued focus on English proficiency.
Arntzen highlighted the importance of addressing the disparities in student performance and ensuring that all students have access to the resources and support they need to succeed. She also emphasized the role of families and communities in supporting students’ academic achievement.
Overall, the data suggests a mixed picture of student performance in Montana, with positive gains in math but challenges in English proficiency. The state remains committed to supporting students and educators in their efforts to improve outcomes and ensure a strong educational foundation for all.
