On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, firefighters across the country gathered to honor their fallen compatriots with a grueling bike ride. The event, organized by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and the FDNY Foundation, saw participants cycling over 500 miles from Washington, D.C. to New York City.
The ride, dubbed the “Tour of Duty,” served as a way for firefighters to pay tribute to the 343 FDNY members who lost their lives during the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. Participants included active and retired firefighters, as well as supporters from various fire departments.
The six-day journey was not only physically challenging but emotionally poignant as well. Riders stopped at firehouses along the route to commemorate their fallen comrades and reflect on the sacrifices made on that fateful day two decades ago.
The event also served as a fundraiser, with proceeds going towards the FDNY Foundation’s programs to support the families of fallen firefighters and promote fire safety education in the community.
FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro praised the participants for their dedication and commitment to honoring the memory of those who gave their lives in service to others. He emphasized the importance of never forgetting the sacrifices made by first responders on 9/11 and the ongoing impact of that tragic day on the fire service.
