The war in Ukraine reached its 899th day with ongoing fighting and tensions between Russian and Ukrainian forces. In the city of Kursk, 13 people were injured when debris from a destroyed Ukrainian missile hit a residential building. Russia claimed to have thwarted Ukrainian attempts to penetrate its territory and destroyed drones and missiles launched from Ukraine.
A fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which both Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of starting. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the fire was extinguished with no rise in radiation levels. Ukrainian forces claimed to have destroyed 53 out of 57 Russian attack drones.
In the midst of the conflict, Ukraine won three athletics medals at the Paris Olympics, which acting president of Ukraine’s athletics federation Olha Saladukha said could have a positive impact amid the invasion. Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who won gold in the women’s high jump, dedicated her medal to the Ukrainian athletes and coaches killed since the conflict began.
Analysts expressed concern over the critical situation along the front lines in eastern Ukraine, particularly around Pokrovsk. As the conflict continues, tensions remain high and the impact is felt across various aspects of Ukrainian society.
