The Pakistani government is set to launch a new communication application called Beep Pakistan, designed for federal officials and employees. The purpose of the app is to provide secure and unified communication within government departments. The government has emphasized that Beep Pakistan should not be compared to WhatsApp, as it is not intended to compete with third-party platforms.
The decision to launch Beep Pakistan comes amid disruptions faced by Pakistanis while using the internet, including the banning of social media platform X due to security threats. Concerns about WhatsApp’s security features have also led to the development of the new app, which aims to ensure data privacy and protection in government communications.
While the Beep Pakistan app has been under trial within the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, concerns about its safety and security have been raised by digital rights activists. The app’s privacy policy states that it will collect various information about users but assures that personal information will not be shared, rented, or sold to other parties.
Despite the government’s efforts to develop a locally-made messaging app, experts warn that local solutions must prioritize user privacy over increasing government power over the private sector. They point to the example of Koo, an Indian social media platform that shut down due to a lack of funding after receiving support from the Indian government. Ultimately, ensuring the safety and security of Beep Pakistan will be crucial in gaining public trust and acceptance.
